Khana Peena Indian Cuisine | Our Story
A family legacy, one plate at a time
Khana Peena was born from love, memory, and a deep respect for the ingredients — the story of one family and a table on College Avenue that's always set for you.
A father's kitchen in San Francisco
In 1982, Chaten's father immigrated to the U.S. and found his footing in San Francisco's Indian kitchens, cooking authentic recipes carried from India. His sons grew up beside him, learning that food made with care feeds something deeper than hunger.
Growing up in the kitchen
Chaten and his brothers absorbed the careful layering of spices, the patience behind a proper curry, the pride in getting it right — a hands-on education that became the foundation of everything Khana Peena serves today.
Opening on College Avenue
In 2005, Chaten opened Khana Peena in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood, carrying a legacy from India through San Francisco and into a home of its own. Anjali joined him, and together they built something the neighborhood would make their own.
